Today, the vibrant and diverse community of Leitrim gathered at The Dock for launch of the Leitrim’s first Migrant Integration Strategy and Action Plan, hosted by Leitrim Development Company in collaboration with Leitrim County Council.
The launch event was attended by local community members, including migrants, local leaders, and representatives from key stakeholder organizations. Leitrim Migrant Integration Strategy and Action Plan 2023-2027 was commissioned by Leitrim Development Company on behalf of a project steering group with Leitrim County Council and Leitrim International Community Group, and representatives of migrant groups and the local community. It follows an extensive consultation process with key agency stakeholders and from the growing migrant population of County Leitrim.
The project received grant aid form Leitrim Local Community Development Committee under the Rural Development Programme (RDP) which is financed by the Irish Government under the Rural Development Programme Ireland 2014-2022 and by the European
Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Speakers at the launch included Chris Gonley, CEO of Leitrim Development Company; Justin Warnock, Cathoirleach of Leitrim County Council; Susan Duffy, SEO of Leitrim County Council; and Bernie Donoghue, Social Inclusion Manager of Leitrim Development Company. Chris Gonley, CEO of Leitrim Development Company, spoke passionately about the transformative potential of the strategy, stating "Today marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to build a more inclusive Leitrim. The Migrant Integration Strategy and Action Plan embodies a commitment of several key agencies to create a community where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive. The strategy will guide our response to the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly diverse population in County Leitrim."
The screening of a short video “Inclusion in Leitrim: Experiences from Migrants and Communities” shared stories of the positive impact migrants have in their local communities. Stories of volunteerism, entrepreneurism, art and culture were shared by individuals such as Nidal Abdi, who set up his own barber shop in Drumshanbo, and by community organizations such as Carrick-on-Shannon TidyTowns, Vincent’s SVP Carrick-on-Shannon, and Carrigallen GAA. The video was developed and funded by Leitrim Development Company’s SICAP Programme and produced by Diamond Water Productions. The video can be viewed on Leitrim Development Company’s Facebook and Youtube pages.
