Drumshanbo Community Council received grant aid from the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 (LEADER) towards the costs of improving the facilities for parking and vehicle access and the provision of a dual purpose training/timeshare production kitchen at The Food Hub. This investment accommodated two new companies to locate to the Food Hub bringing a total of 10 additional jobs to the area. The shared use kitchen helped the Food Hub to sustain smaller food businesses and also support the development of others.
The Manager of the Food Hub, Fergal McPartland, explains that “the funding from Leitrim Development Company enabled Drumshanbo Community Council to develop opportunities for small food producers in the region and to expand the range of services available in the agri-food area. The centre is now home to 6 food companies and a new project in the dairy sector will commence in April. It is hoped that in the long term this project will create further employment and contribute to economic development at a very challenging time for small industry.”
This project have offered potential tenants who are substantial employers, enhanced facilities at the Food Hub in Drumshanbo. It also offers smaller indigenous food businesses in Co. Leitrim and beyond the opportunity to take part in valuable training and in test and small scale production in a new shared use kitchen. This investment has and will continue to have a substantial multiplier effect in the employment opportunities locally and in the benefits to Drumshanbo Community Council Ltd. who will be able to continue to invest in this and other important local projects.
