On 23rd September 2024, Leitrim Development Company will mark the 20th-anniversary of the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) in Leitrim. This September, the RSS, a key initiative of the Department of Social Protection, proudly celebrates this anniversary, marking two decades of dedicated service to rural communities across Leitrim. The RSS welcomed its first participant in September 2004 and has since been instrumental in providing part-time employment opportunities and supporting local development projects throughout the region.
The RSS was established to offer financial support and employment to low-income farmers and fisherpersons, significantly impacting rural areas by funding and overseeing a diverse range of community projects. These projects include maintaining local amenities, supporting cultural and heritage events, and contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
“This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the Rural Social Scheme over the past 20 years,” said Karen Guihen, Employment Programmes Co-ordinator of Leitrim Development Company. “The RSS has not only provided essential financial assistance to individuals but has also played a vital role in enhancing the quality of life in our rural communities. We are incredibly proud of the positive outcomes we have achieved and look forward to continuing this valuable work.”
To celebrate this significant anniversary, a special event will be held on 23rd September 2024 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at The Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon. We warmly invite members of the public, community groups, past and present participants, and local businesses to join us in commemorating this important milestone. The event will feature special guests, a showcase of successful projects, and opportunities to connect with fellow community members. Refreshments will also be served.
If you plan to attend the celebration, please register by emailing info@ldco.ie or by calling 071-9641770 no later than Wednesday, 18th September 2024.
This celebration also coincides with Local Development Week, further emphasising the collaborative efforts of both the Employment Programmes and SICAP (Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme) to enhance rural life in Leitrim.
